COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Governor Mark Sanford says two of South Carolina's top law enforcement officials will leave their jobs amid criticism of their handling of a state trooper who used a racial epithet during a traffic stop four years ago.
Sanford said Friday that Public Safety Department Director James Schweitzer and Highway Patrol Colonel Russell Roark had submitted their resignations.
Both will remain in their jobs until replacements can take over.
Sanford told reporters he saw video from the 2004 traffic stop Thursday and met with black lawmakers. He then questioned the two officials.
The trooper was reprimanded and suspended. Sanford says he should have been fired.
Sanford says former Highway Patrol Lieutenant Colonel Harry Stubblefield will take over the patrol when Roark steps down. Sanford said he plans to name a new department director.
