COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A legislator is seeking an opinion on whether a Republican House member properly used the state plane when he shuttled a conservative commentator to Columbia for a hearing.

Democratic Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter of Orangeburg sought an opinion Thursday from the House Ethics Committee on whether it's appropriate for a legislator to use the state plane for people testifying before a subcommittee.

Her letter comes a day after Rep. Bill Chumley of Woodruff brought Walter Williams from a Washington-area airport to push for a bill that initially sought to nullify the federal health care law. The state aeronautics division says it would have charged $6,400 for the four legs to pick up and return Williams.

Chumley dismisses requests that he reimburse the state, calling Williams' testimony official state business.
