COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The House budget-writing committee wants Gov. Nikki Haley's office to pay more than $1 million for contracts she signed in response to a massive security breach at the state's tax collection agency.
The budget clause approved Tuesday would require the governor's office to repay loans from the insurance reserve fund that covered contracts for consulting, legal and public relations firms.
It would require Haley's office budget to reimburse $300,000 for attorneys, $200,000 for the media message and $750,000 for a computer security firm.
Rep. Jim Merrill says the governor needs to take ownership of those expenses.
The Budget and Control Board approved a $20 million inter-agency loan in December to cover contracts Haley approved after learning of the hacking in October. Haley is chairwoman of the oversight board.
