CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says he's humbled and overwhelmed by the support he's been getting as tries to mount a political comeback.

It's been about a month since Sanford announced he would seek South Carolina's vacant 1st Congressional District seat that he once held for three terms.

He told reporters during a conference call Tuesday he's appreciative of the reception he's received since he has been campaigning in the district on the state's southern coast.

The call was also to announce that state Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort was endorsing his old boss. Davis was chief of staff when Sanford was governor.

Sanford's political career was derailed when he revealed four years ago he was having an affair with an Argentine woman to whom he is now engaged.
