CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Republicans say they will hold a debate before the primary for the open 1st District congressional seat.

The debate is scheduled for March 14 at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston.

Sixteen Republicans filed to run for the seat, and party officials said Monday they will announce the format for the debate and the criteria to be used later.

The U.S. House seat opened after Tim Scott was appointed to take over Jim DeMint's U.S. Senate seat earlier this year.
