COLUMBIA (WACH) -- South Carolina Senator Katrina Shealy announced Monday free concealed weapons permit classes for the state's teachers and administrators.

After her recent win taking a Senate seat in Novemeber, she proposed a bill that would allow those with concealed weapons permits in schools.

Shealy said SLED and the Mid-Carolina Rifle Club have agreed to hold fees for the written portion of a shooting test. Educators will only have to pay for the application fee and materials needed for the course.

"You can't fight a gun with a desk, you can't fight a gun with a book, they should be able to have the same defense that somebody is fighting them with," said Shealy.

However Representative James Smith dosen't quite see it that way.

Smith said instead of teachers being trained to fire, the aim should be focused on law enforcement and their role.

"We want our teachers to be focused on teaching if security is an issue, we want to look at law enforcement to provide the support and secuirty thats needed." said Smith.

Classes are scheduled February 12 and February 14.
