HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- Officials on Hilton Head Island are skeptical of a recommendation that South Carolina provide funding for beach renourishment projects.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head Island reported that town officials worry that state funding would complicate efforts to keep the beaches attractive for visitors.

A coastal study commission told the General Assembly last week that the state should set up a reliable funding method to pay to keep sand on South Carolina's beaches.

Assistant town manager Greg DeLoach says Hilton Head would like to reduce the burden on local taxpayers to pay for pilling sand on the beach. But DeLoach says he's worried that conditions the state might impose to get the funds would be too difficult.

He says the town usually pays for the projects itself.
