COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Richland County election officials are still counting votes a day after voters in some precincts stood in line for seven hours to cast ballots in Tuesday's election.

County election commission deputy director Gary Baum says officials are looking into what happened, but have no definitive answers at this point.

Baum says absentee ballots were still being counted Tuesday morning.

State Election Commission spokesman Chris Whitmire says Richland County was the only one where serious problems were reported.

Whitmire says state turnout was heavy, but did not set a record. However, Whitmire says the number of absentee ballots statewide did reach around 400,000, which was a record.
