COLUMBIA -- Sixth District Congressman and House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn was at Fort Jackson Monday to present former Army Specialist Kevin Powers with military honors that he should have received 20-years ago.
Following the end of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Powers was offered an early discharge to pursue his education.
Last year when Powers was seeking VA benefits, he found an error had been made on his certificate of release, otherwise known as a DD form 214.
Powers contacted Congressman Clyburn, who was able to fix the error on the certificate verifying his eligibility and securing the veteran several awards.
The awards and decorations Powers received were: the Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Service Stars; Expert Badge with mortar bar; Sharp Shooter Badge with grenade bar; Marksman Badge with rifle bar; Kuwait Liberation Medal/Government of Kuwait; and Kuwait Liberation Medal/Saudi Arabia.
