After policing the internet, an Irmo teen finds himself in trouble. Investigators say he committed a cyber crime using the popular social networking site 'Myspace.'
Irmo Police Chief Brian Buck says in January, 19-year-old Erron Houston, logged on to the popular social networking site, to humiliate his ex-girlfriend.
"He posted some pictures of her on her Myspace website after she had given him the password," said Chief Buck.
Investigators say they were pornographic pictures, and add Houston changed the password on the account so his ex couldn't take down the explicit photos.
"He also put her cell phone number on the website, so she was getting harassing phone calls," said Chief Buck. "And he in addition had made some harassing phone calls to her."
Chief Buck says good old fashion police work, combined with some high-tech spy ware led police right to their suspect.
"Its very easy to use the anonymity of the internet to threaten and harass and belittle and demean somebody," said Chief Buck.
Investigators call this incident a sign of the times. Pointing out more people can now use the internet to intimidate.
"Its an unusual harassment case, in that it involves a Myspace website," said Chief Buck. "Other than that it's like any other harassment case."
Chief Buck says there's a fine line between teasing and harassing. And says this teen crossed that line by violating someone else's 'space.'
Houston is in the Lexington County Jail, facing an "unlawful communication" charge. Investigators say a conviction could produce a sentence of less than a year. He has a bond hearing Thursday morning.
