(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina legislator who cited a report saying 12 of his colleagues failed to submit tax returns between 1999 and 2007 has filed three bills saying such offenders should be barred from holding public office.

Aiken Sen. Greg Ryberg didn't name the legislators cited in a report from the state Revenue Department. Ryberg said Tuesday he was only citing statistics that came in a response to questions about legislators serving and having delinquent returns from the Revenue Department.

Sumter Sen. Phil Leventis said Ryberg's statistics created a cloud over all legislators and Ryberg owed it the public details.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell said he knew of the letter and urged the Revenue Department to crack down on legislators breaking the law.
