COLUMBIA (WACH) - The meat department at Harvest Hope Food Bank is being hit hard after losing more than 5 million pounds of food the USDA would usually provide.

Skot Garrick with Harvest Hope says the loss is due to a droughts that hit the Midwest this summer.

"We do not have as much meat product, canned fruit product and canned meat product to provide to folks coming to us in need," said Garrick.

The major loss of proteins has Harvest Hope looking at other ways to provide balanced meals to those in need.

"We're always going to try and find what we have to replace any loses. The loss of the USDA meat product, we're going to replace it with canned, high nutrition meat products," said Garrick.

The organization is accepting donations all across the Midlands and has six donation centers at Piggly Wiggly stores.
