COLUMBIA (WACH)—Motorists in the Midlands are seeing slight relief at the pump with a drop just short of 1 cent a gallon over the last week, bringing the average to $3.45, according to ColumbiaGasPrices.com.  The website also noted that the price of gas is nearly 35 cents over last year.

The national average, however, has gone the other way, nearly a cent to $3.80, being pulled up by an average in California over $4.61, and in some places in the Golden State over $5.00 a gallon.

"Thanks largely due to the situation in California, the national average rose slightly in the last week," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "The good news for Californians is to expect relief this week. Around the rest of the nation I expect a mixed bag, with prices not moving significantly in either direction from what I can see at this time. Nationally, prices remain much higher than last year, especially in California, where the average now stands 88c/gal higher than a year ago," DeHaan said.
