AIKEN, S.C. (AP) -- Gov. Nikki Haley and officials from the state Department of Commerce are talking about ways to foster economic development in rural areas.

The 23rd annual South Carolina Rural Summit is happening Monday in Aiken.

Haley is giving a keynote address at the meeting and presiding over an awards ceremony. She says the gathering gives local leaders the opportunity to share ideas about how to improve their communities and make them more competitive.

Other speakers include Joe Max Higgins, chief executive officer of Columbus-Lowndes Development Link and Visions International CEO Bernell K. Ingram.
