BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- Beaufort City Council has torpedoed the idea of so-called "botels" at the Beaufort's Downtown Marina.
The Beaufort Gazette reports city council voted 4-1 Tuesday against the idea of allowing boaters to rent cabins overnight while they are docked at the marina.
The local planning commission approved the idea last year after it was approached by the owner of a 93-foot yacht that docks at the marina.
Council members had various objections to the idea ranging from the need for more parking to wear and tear on the marina by larger vessels.
One council member said he received numerous letters from residents opposed to the idea. Mayor Billy Keyserling says botels don't fit his vision of the city's waterfront.
