The South Carolina State Ports Authority is getting a $145,000 federal grant to help get older polluting trucks serving the port off the road.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina State Ports Authority is getting a $145,000 federal grant to help get older polluting trucks serving the port off the road.
Ports CEO Jim Newsome and others are scheduled to discuss the program during a news briefing on Thursday at the port in Charleston.
Under the program started almost two years ago, truckers driving trucks that are 20 years old can get a $10,000 incentive toward buying a newer, less-polluting vehicle. In addition, truckers will also get the scrap value of their old truck from a local recycler, usually around $2,000 per truck.
Half of the $10,000 incentive is paid by the Ports Authority while the other half is paid through the federal grant.
