BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- It's been a dismal shrimping season along the South Carolina coast. But that won't stop folks in Beaufort from celebrating.

The Beaufort Gazette reports the annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival is being held this weekend as usual.

South Carolina Shrimpers Association president Mark Smith says he can't remember a worse season in almost 40 years. Shrimping started out well in June helped by last year's warm winter that helped some shrimpers make an early profit.

Things fell off and September was one of the worst months. Usually it is one of the best.

The cost of fuel is also a concern. Smith says it takes up to $1,000 in fuel for a shrimping trip that yields only about $900 in shrimp.
