Columbia, S.C. (WACH)--City officials have signed an agreement for the sale of Capital City Stadium.

Several months of debate over whether the city should sell the 6 acre property were put to a rest on June.  City council approved the sale in a 6 to 1 vote.

City officials signed a contract Wednesday hat will move the transaction forward.

The grounds will likely be turned into a Walmart Shopping Center.

Many who frequent the Cap City Stadium are opposed to the sale including Michael Lawing.

"It may be in disrepair right now and it may not be the prettiest thing but I think it's definintely a special part of Columbia." Said Lawing.  If they take away baseball and the stadium there's really going to be a big hole missing here."

Lawing moved to Columbia for college, and was part of USC's marching band that practiced at the Cap City Stadium.

"I spent a better part of 3 years here almost everyday for hours and hours." Said Lawing.

Many in the Midlands are also concerned about the traffic a retail giant would create along Assembly Street.

The contract to sell the property will not be official until the developer meets all conditions, including environmental requirements.

The negotiations could take several months to finalize, once the conditions are met the sale will move forward.
