Crews worked to stop sewage from spilling into the Saluda River Tuesday morning after a pipe became blocked near the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. Wastewater maintenance officials say the sanitary sewer overflow was discovered shortly after 8 a.m. in the 500 block of Wildlife Parkway.

Earlier this week Alpine Utilities spilled more than 5,000 gallons of sewage into a creek which empties into the Saluda River. A review of the Department of Health and Environmental Control records shows Alpine is responsible for eight other spills this year. The amounts leaked range from 15 gallons to 5,000.
