There's good news to report for all of the motorists in the Midlands. Average gas prices in the Columbia area have dropped since last week. According to ColumbiaGasPrices.com, a gallon of unleaded has dropped 2.6 cents to an average of $3.38.

While the pain at the pump continues South Carolina is holding onto one of the top spots for having the lowest gas prices in the country. According to GasBuddy.com the Palmetto State ranks fourth in the nation. Michael Fields, Director of the Petroleum Marketers Association says motorists can thank the state's 16 cent gas tax.

The cost for a gallon of gas in the Midlands is up 2.5 cents per gallon over last week's report by ColumbiaGasPrices.com. That places the average at $3.40 in Columbia.

The average cost for a gallon of unleaded is now at $3.24. That means the Columbia area average is growing faster than the national increase of 17 cents per gallon over the previous week's report. However, we're still 10 cents below the national average. Is that a good thing or does the recent increase overpower that fact?
