The work of rotating the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley is taking longer than expected. Officials say the sub has been rotated about 30 degrees but the job won't be complete until Friday. A laser monitoring system had to be readjusted Thursday and the sub's bow started to dip, so workers had to level it again.

The Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley has been raised slightly from a tank of water in preparation for it to be rotated. Workers at a conservation lab in North Charleston raised submarine 3 feet out of its conservation tank on Wednesday. That will allow supports to be placed beneath the vessel so it can be rotated upright by the end of next week.

The first submarine to sink an enemy warship was pulled from the Atlantic Ocean off Sullivans Island in 2000 and officials have been working to preserve it. The sub has been in a cradle on its side since it was recovered.
