The Kershaw County Sheriff's Department, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigators arrested 63-year-old Norman Elliot at his home in Lugoff Monday. Sheriff Jim Matthews says customs officials stopped a package set for delivery to Elliot coming from Nigeria. The package included almost 200 counterfeit checks worth over $550,000.

South Carolina officials say federal rules on employment verification records have idled the state's illegal immigration inspectors for a month and now their jobs could be eliminated. Gov. Nikki Haley and the state's top labor official said Friday the state might have to lay off two dozen inspectors because the U.S. Department of Homeland Security won't let employers share electronic employment verification information.
