Columbia police are increasing patrols in areas of the city they say are hot spots for driving under the influence. This past weekend, two Columbia patrol cars were hit by suspected drunk drivers.

Law enforcement officials are stepping up their patrols this weekend to make sure motorists are safe in the downtown Columbia area. Community safety checkpoints will be set up around town starting Friday and running through the weekend.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety held its sixth annual DUI Enforcement Recognition Ceremony acknowledging officers for their continued efforts to reduce drunk driving. While the number of DUI tickets given in the state remains high, Director Mark Keel says it's a good/bad scenario.
