Interim Department of Public Safety director Col. F. K. Lancaster Jr. told The Associated Press that the agency is waiting to hear from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement about undergoing its four-week 287g training. He says an answer might take 18 months. The program effectively deputizes local law enforcement officers to enforce federal immigration laws.

Governor Nikki Haley nominated Public Safety agency director Mark Keel to head the State Law Enforcement Division Wednesday. Keel, who would still need Senate approval, will replace outgoing director Reggie Lloyd who announced in March that he planned to leave the agency before his term ended in January.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety held its sixth annual DUI Enforcement Recognition Ceremony acknowledging officers for their continued efforts to reduce drunk driving. While the number of DUI tickets given in the state remains high, Director Mark Keel says it's a good/bad scenario.
