Columbia Police say a man shot at a Food Lion on Fairfield Road ended up at the Gable Oaks apartment complex Tuesday night. It’s the second time in a week this area off North Main Street has made headlines.

More details are emerging about the man who was killed Wednesday after coming out of a Shandon home firing an AK-47 at officers. Officials say 22-year-old Blakely Jernigan was wearing homemade explosives when he emerged from the rental house. They also say they found another AK-47 along with other weapons inside the home as well as marijuana and cocaine. Investigators also say Jernigan's girlfriend was found passed out in a bathtub.

A bulletproof vest is credited with saving the live of a Columbia Police Officer who was shot in the chest Wednesday morning. Columbia police require all of their officers to wear the vests, but not every department in the Midlands can afford the life saving tools. One company is helping provide vests to departments without.
