BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A Bishopville police officer is recovering from serious injuries after he was attacked by a dog while on patrol.

Authorities say Josh Kelly was checking on reports of a drug deal around 11 p.m. Tuesday when he was bitten.

Bishopville Police Chief Sonny Ledda says his officer was able to drive himself about 15 miles to a Hartsville hospital despite suffering from traumatic groin injuries.

Ledda says Kelly was then taken by helicopter to a Columbia hospital and is expected to recover.

Authorities are still looking for the dog that attacked the officer.
