ORANGEBURG, SC (WACH / AP) - A  42-year-old man was shot and killed by an Orangeburg County deputy Tuesday.

Orangeburg County Sheriff's Spokesperson Keisa Peterson says a deputy was investigating a complaint about a harrassment call Tuesday afternoon.

According to State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry, the deputy shot  a man on at the scene on Chitwood Street. As is normal procedure when an officer is involved in any shooting, SLED is called in to investigate.

Berry said the investigation was in its preliminary stages and he had few other details.

Residents in the neighborhood say Caldwell had a shovel during the confrontation with the officer.

District 5 school spokesman Greg Carson says Whittaker Elementary School students were held inside when the shooting occurred. Carson says students were released after officers told them the situation was under control.
