CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Elizabeth Colbert Busch has picked up a key endorsement in her race for an open South Carolina congressional seat.

The sister of comedian Stephen Colbert was endorsed Monday in Charleston by Martin Skelly who had also been seeking the Democratic nomination in the state's 1st Congressional District.

Skelly says he wants to help unite the party going into the special election. Colbert Busch still faces perennial Democratic candidate Ben Frasier for the nomination.

On the Republican side, 16 candidates are running for the GOP nomination. The field includes former Gov. Mark Sanford who is trying to make a political comeback, and Teddy Turner, the son of media magnate Ted Turner.

The seat was left open when Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Tim Scott to South Carolina's open U.S. Senate seat
