12 of the dogs seized are being cared for at Pets Inc. in West Columbia.
COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Several dogs have been rescued from a suspected puppy mill in Chesterfield County.
Officials removed 44 dogs from a home there Wednesday. The county's animal services director Danielle Bowe says the dogs were sick and not being properly cared for.
About 12 of the dogs were brought to Pets Inc. in West Columbia. The others were taken in by shelters along the East Coast as far away as New York.
In addition to adoption, Pets Inc. is also seeking donations to help care for the animals
“We have animals with skin issues, ear issues, eye issues and with social issues; it's not much of a life for these guys,” said Jane Brundage, Cofounder of Pets Inc.
“We do run a low cost center here, but it all costs money. These guys coming in; you can average about 150 dollars per dog of medical work that's actually done for these guys,” said Reid Barrett, Pets Inc’s Clinic Director.
Officials say the dogs are doing very well now that they're receiving proper care. The dogs need be spayed and neutered before they can be adopted.
