COLUMBIA (WACH) - A man and woman accused of not properly caring for a child were arrested Wednesday.

Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago says Eugene Coleman, 62, and Joe Ann Coleman, 57, are charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.

According to Santiago, the Coleman's are accused of not adequately feeding a 12-year-old girl in their care after an investigation by the Columbia Police Department's Special Victims Unit.

Authorities say the child was malnourished and underweight as a result of the improper care.

The child was taken into emergency protective custody, according to police.

The situation is under investigation by the Columbia Police Department and the Richland County Department of Social Services.
