NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Top state elected and law enforcement officials are scheduled to meet in the South Carolina Lowcountry for a summit on guns and violence.

Friday's meeting in North Charleston includes Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell, Attorney General Alan Wilson, Department of Public Safety Director Leroy Smith and SLED Chief Mark Keel, along with local law enforcement, mayors and other elected officials.

The idea is to discuss ways to reduce violent crime and gun violence.

The meeting is open to the public and is hosted by state Sen. Robert Ford and state Rep. Wendell Gilliard of Charleston.
