SPARTANBURG, S.C. State officials are investigating the death of a University of South Carolina Upstate freshman who was found unresponsive in his dorm room.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said 19-year-old Daniel B. Groshans of Rock Hill died Saturday afternoon at a local hospital.

School spokeswoman Tammy Whaley told multiple media outlets that Groshans was found by his roommates. Whaley said she didn't know of any illness that Groshans had.

An autopsy and toxicology test were planned. The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death as required by state law when a student dies on a public college campus.

Whaley said USC Upstate is offering counseling services to students and a candlelight vigil is scheduled for Monday night.
