A member of Richland District 2’s board of trustees has died.
Theresa Riley, spokeswoman for Richland 2, said Stephen Shellenberg suffered a massive heart attack at home and died Friday morning.
Riley said Shellenberg had a history of heart trouble, but that his death is a shock to the entire Richland 2 family.
“In the 14 years Steve has served on the board of trustees, I have come know him very well. He loved this school district and he loved our students. We will forever be thankful for his many contributions that have taken this school district from ordinary to extraordinary,” said Dr. Steve Hefner, superintendent.
Shellenberg was elected to the school board in 1994 and re-elected in 1998, 2002 and 2006. He was currently serving as chairman, but had also served previously as vice-chairman and secretary. Shellenberg earned a B.S. in accounting from St. John’s University.
His term would have expired in 2010.
Shellenberg had three adult children.
