COLUMBIA (WACH) - From caring for the heart, to caring for the colon; March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

The University of South Carolina's Center for colon Cancer Research is reminding the community to get a screening.

USC kicked off the "Love Your Colon" campaign Tuesday. Several activities are planned in March to encourage check-ups.

About 700 South Carolinians die from colon cancer each year according to officials at the research center, but it can be prevented for adults over 50 years old.

"You never know. In South Carolina, we have high incidents of colon cancer, an it's not necessarily based on heredity. But it is based on the environment, the food we eat, all of those things coming together. It is not a very complicated process. It's very simple," said Karry Guillory, a colon cancer survivor.

According to the research center, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for men and women in South Carolina
