COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina has been rewarded for enrolling more eligible children in Medicaid services.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said Wednesday that South Carolina has received more than $2.4 million.
Federal officials say South Carolina increased enrollment by using food stamp data to help identify candidates, since any child in a family eligible for food stamps is also eligible for Medicaid.
South Carolina is one of 23 states to earn the bonuses that totaled $306 million this year. The state says it plans to use its share of the money to offset to cost of insuring the additional children.
This is the second year in a row South Carolina has gotten such recognition. Last year, the state earned a $2.7 million bonus for similar progress.
