SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- The Sumter County sheriff said one of his deputies illegally obtained prescription drugs, likely for an injury suffered when he was shot on duty seven years ago.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis told The Item of Sumter that 40-year-old investigator James Williams was arrested Thursday and charged with illegally obtaining a controlled substance. Authorities say Williams was getting prescriptions for the same drugs from different doctors without telling them what he was taking.

Williams was shot in September 2005 while struggling with an armed suspect.

Authorities haven't decided whether Williams can keep his job. His supervisor, Sheriff's Capt. Allen Dailey, called him a good employee.

It wasn't known if Williams had a lawyer.
