COLUMBIA (WACH/AP) -- Female students, faculty and visitors to the University of South Carolina's School of Medicine are going to have access to a new nursing mothers' lounge.

The lounge is one of several of its kind throughout USC campuses and is a clean, private space that allows mothers to breastfeed their children comfortably and without disruption.

The lounge is part of USC's Lactation Support Policy which mandates that new mothers returning to work at USC, who wish to continue breastfeeding, have access to a discreet and comfortable lounge rather than breastfeeding in a restroom or locker room.

The school says USC first lady Patricia Pastides and School of Medicine Dean Richard Hoppmann are celebrating the grand opening on Thursday. The celebration is set for the second floor of the school's library at its Garner's Ferry Road location in Columbia.

The lounge is paid for in part by the Richland Community Health Partners and the Healthy South Carolina Initiative.
