COLUMBIA (WACH) - The holiday shopping season is officially under way, and Cyber Monday appears to be one of the biggest online shopping days ever recorded.

According to IBM Benchmark, as of 12 p.m. on Nov. 26, sales were up more than 24 percent compared with sales in 2011.

Experts say online shopping is continuing to grow.

"About 52 percent of shoppers will be doing some sort of shopping online," said University of South Carolina Department of Retailing professor Karen Edwards.

Edwards says this is the first time there has been a majority of American consumers shopping online for the holiday season.

Officials say consumer spending was more than six billion dollars during the holidays last year.
