CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Charleston Mayor Joe Riley is one of 30 mayors from around the nation appearing in a new ad calling on Congress to take action to prevent gun violence.

The new ad was released Thursday.

About 900 mayors from 45 states are part of a coalition called Mayors Against Illegal Guns asking that is asking that Congress act immediately. The group wants Congress to pass legislation to require background checks for all gun sales. The group also is calling for limits on military style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

The mayors also want Congress to make gun trafficking a federal crime.

Riley says the nation's gun murder rate is 20 times higher than other developed countries and getting guns out of the hands of criminals will save lives.
