CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina State Ports Authority plans to open a $35 million inland port in Greer have hit a snag.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the authority says a company that operates a refrigerated warehouse on property needed for the site has refused to move. The authority board met by telephone Tuesday and agreed to use eminent domain to condemn and demolish the building.
Nordic Cold Storage had no immediate comment.
Ports authority officials would not speculate on how long the condemnation process might take but said an out-of-court settlement is possible.
Authority CEO Jim Newsome said the agency wants to open the inland port by Labor Day.
The inland port provides a place where containers can be loaded on trains for delivery to the Port of Charleston.
