COLUMBIA (WACH/AP) - The new boss at South Carolina’s Department of Revenue says the theft of millions of taxpayer’s data will result in a “change in culture” at the agency, calling security a “non-negotiable” cost of doing business.
Interim director Bill Blume said a top goal for the agency is to restore taxpayer confidence. Blume made the statements to a Senate panel investigating the hacking, going on to say that the DOR will spend $21.7 million to accomplish that goal, which is $1.5 million more than initially estimated.
Blume said that other changes include re-organizing the chain of command so that information flows more directly to him.
Former IT security officer Scott Shealy testified earlier that recommendations he made that could have prevented the theft were dismissed as unnecessary and never reached senior management.
Blume took the agency's helm two weeks ago.
