HORRY COUNTY, SC -- There was a frightening scene at an Horry County high school Friday morning.

According to reports, a school resource officer was stabbed and a student was shot at Carolina Forest High School.  The student died at Conway Medical Center.  The officer is in good condition and has been released from the hospital.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge has identified the high school student as 16-year-old Tervor Varinecz, of Myrtle Beach, and has confirmed that the teen died of a gunshot wound.  An autopsy will be performed Saturday.

At 10:18 AM, the following statement was released by Teal Britton, Horry County School District Spokeswoman: "An incident occurred this morning at Carolina Forest High School at approximately 8:20 a.m. The incident resulted in injuries to the student and the SRO and both were transported via ambulance to Conway Medical Center. The incident was not witnessed by any other students.  Their conditions are unknown at this time.  The school remains under lockdown at this time. Parents will be allowed on campus to pick up students in an orderly fashion.  The matter is under investigation by law enforcement."

Earlier, Britton told Barrington News Network station WPDE NewsChannel 15 that an 11th grade male student asked to see the school resource officer this morning, after which a confrontation occurred. Britton said the student stabbed the school resource officer and that the school resource officer returned with a gunshot.

Horry County police have a mobile command unit at the school.   Conway Medical Center is not releasing any information about the condition of the student or the SRO.  They tell WPDE they were instructed by police to refer all questions to police.

Classes at Carolina Forest High School have been cancelled for the day.

Not only am I a parent. I have two children in Middle School and one in High School. There are enough issues the the Columbia areas schools without worrying about the coast or upstate. You says the story sounds fishy. Is this some plot by all the School Resource Officers to kill our kids and lie about it? The article is under Columbia's News. It has nothing to do with Columbia.

Evidently you aren't a parent. Who cares that it is Midlands Connect in Columbia. Don't you care about what is happening to the children in public schools in the state you live in? Something about this story sounds fishy. You'll never know a different side to the story if there were no witnesses. I have a 10th grader and it worries me.

When did Horry County become in the Midlands? Why is this article Columbia Headlines?
