National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) First Annual Walk in Columbia, SC to Help End
Eating Disorders Scheduled for Saturday, March 2, 2013 (Columbia, March 2, 2013) -- The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) will hold its first annual NEDA Walk in Columbia, SC and in many of other cities around the country to raise awareness and much needed funding to battle anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. The NEDA Walk in Columbia will take place on Saturday, March 3, 2013 at the Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Road. To find out how to register, sponsor a walker, or donate to NEDA, visit www.nedawalk.org. Nearly 24 million people in the U.S. suffer from anorexia and bulimia; millions more from binge eating disorder. These illnesses affect people from all walks of life. Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. “Until recently, most people have suffered in silence with eating disorders,” said Lynn Grefe, NEDA CEO. “The Walk is a way of breaking the silence, creating community, and giving people the opportunity to join together and do something to help eradicate these debilitating illnesses.” Nearly everyone knows someone suffering from an eating disorder. Karen McMullen encourages everyone to join the NEDA Walk to help families affected in South Carolina to overcome these illnesses and, ultimately, to find a cure. With organizers planning NEDA Walks throughout the country, NEDA expects to attract many thousands of walkers, and hopes to raise close to $100,000 the first year. The funds will be used to support the educational and advocacy programs NEDA offers to support families affected by eating disorders.
