Local Playwright Premieres Stage Play “Like Peeling an Onion”, Honoring the Memory of Family Member December 6-9, 2012.

Midlands playwright Charles Curtis will locally premiere his one-act stage play, “Like Peeling an Onion” on December 6-9, 2012, at the Columbia Music Festival Association located at 914 Pulaski Street. “Like Peeling an Onion” weaves a story of secrets about the life of David Greene, and how even a person’s closest family and friends may not know who a person really is. After the sudden and tragic death of David, his family and friends try to make sense of his life while packing up his apartment. Through packing up his things and finding out secrets about his life, they each come to realize that they never really knew him at all. “Like Peeling an Onion” proves that while dead men tell no tales, their secrets do.
“This show was inspired by the memory of my uncle Gary, who died before I had a chance to get to know him”, says Curtis. “All my life, I was told that I remind people so much of him, but, no one could or would ever tell me what that really meant. I wrote this story is my chance to get to know the man that I remind the world of. ““Like Peeling an Onion” was featured at the 2011 National Black Theatre Festival’s Readers Series of New Plays and premiered in full production at Winthrop University through Winthrop’s Council of Student Leaders. Charles Curtis, is a professional musician, actor, and playwright. His performance credits include local and regional opera, musicals, and stage plays. He has earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice Performance from Presbyterian College prior to his graduate studies in Music and Counseling at the University of South Carolina and currently serves as the theatre teaching artist for the Midlands Center for Expressive Arts.
