Volunteer at an Organic Farm JANUARY 29, 2009
Go to the source of your food and see how it's grown.
I have a friend who works during the week as a counselor, a draining and sometimes truly disconcerting job. She works to heal impoverished children from horrible mental disorders and watches her funding constantly getting cut. But on the weekend she takes a vacation from it all. She does what she loves most and works on an organic farm and vineyard. She works vigorously to produce some of the best foods North Carolina has to offer on a fabulous organic farm and vineyard.
As a result, you've never met a greener eater. No, no she doesn't just get the recommended daily allowance of greens, she knows where every bite of food she eats comes from and how it was produced. Seem impossible? The nonprofit Organic Volunteers (www.GrowFood.org) hooks up volunteer ages 16 to 65 with an organic farm experience at 1,100 participating farms across every United States and Latin American country. Volunteers can also go to Australia, Italy and many other countries.
